Books on Prescription
Books on Prescription is a Reading Well scheme provided jointly by South Gloucestershire Libraries and your local primary care trust. It aims to help people cope with common mental health problems by allowing GPs and Mental Health Practitioners to “prescribe” or recommend self-help books, which cover a wide range of difficulties. Given the huge range of self-help books now available on the market, it can feel a bit daunting deciding what to read. The books on the Reading Well Books on Prescription scheme are constantly under review, and have been read and evaluated by healthcare professionals and have been found to be useful, effective and easy to read.
You may either borrow your chosen book from your local library or, if you prefer, buy the book from your local bookshop or an online bookseller.
How does it work?
The Reading Well Books on Prescription leaflets are available from your practitioner at South Gloucestershire Talking Therapies, and at your GP surgery. If you are a member of the library, you can take the leaflet to your local library and borrow the recommended book. If not, you will need to become a member, but joining is quick and easy.
How do I join a library?
You can join a library at any age and membership is free. You will be able to use your library card at any South Gloucestershire library, mobile library and for access to online resources too. For more information see the South Gloucestershire library website.
